Now that you have set your mind on getting into the private label pet food business, have you asked yourself what kind of pet food you want to sell? Setting aside your pet preference, is dog food the right private label pet food to get into?

Being a pet lover helps

Passion plays a major role when putting up a business. More than just profit as a motivation, you have to have that love of pets. Because if you don’t have that, it wouldn’t be convincing to your market that you’re selling something that’s beneficial to their pets. Let that fuel your pet food business then decide which kind of pet food you’d like to have your private label on.

It’s all in the numbers

According to the 2017-2018 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA), 68% of US households own a pet. Of this population, 60.2 million are dog owners compared to 47.1 cat owners. The rest owns other pets like fish, birds, etc. Of the 60,2 million dog owners, the dog population is 89.7 million. These dog owners spend around $307 million annually for food and food treats alone.[1] Given these numbers, it just makes sense that you have to get into private label dog food.

Not only these, according to globalnewswire.com, “dog food dominates the market due to increasing dog ownership coupled with the rising pet humanization trend across the globe.”[2] The same report says that dry pet food product type is the most popular among pet owners. As for ingredient type, animal-derived pet food leads followed by plant-derived pet food.

Pay attention to trends

The pet food market is very responsive to the trends and private labels are just happy to go with it. Humanization of pets is a big factor that human-grade pet foods are on the rise. Not only that, many pet owners are going for all-natural, grain-free pet food to keep their dogs healthy. And with the recent spate of dogs having dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) related to dog foods, you might want to consider adding taurine and other protein-rich ingredients to your recipe.

What’s the flavor?

Then there’s the issue of flavor. What flavor will be enjoyable to dogs?  Due diligence goes with passion for the business. Research further and check out online resources that might be able to help you. Of course, your private label manufacturer can also help you. It’s just a matter of finding the right one. Why not explore partnering with Addiction Private Label. You might even find the product range you need for your recipe.
